Our four Bachelor of Science degrees and our four Master of Engineering degrees are available on campus in Perth, Western Australia and online. Our Master of Engineering (Industrial Automation) is also available on campus in Melbourne, Victoria.
Dr Steve Mackay – Dean of Engineering
Steve is passionate about many things, but his passions for engineering and education define him. He has enjoyed a varied career in engineering and he continues to study to ensure he keeps abreast of the many changes in an age driven by technology. Most of his experience has been gained whilst working ‘on the job’; so he has a strong practical focus in everything he does, believing that all study must lead to a successful engineering career.
He has worked mainly in the automation, data acquisition, instrumentation, data communications and process control areas of engineering throughout Australia, Europe, Africa and North America for the past thirty-five years. Although perhaps initially greeted with some scepticism, Steve successfully pioneered the application of new technologies in Australia and overseas such as industrial data communications systems, engineering online learning using remote labs and the commercialisation of engineering training worldwide.
Throughout his career, Steve has been responsible for activities ranging from detailed hardware and software design for control system interfaces to the management of complex multimillion dollar mechanical and electrical projects. His experience has covered many industries including power stations, mining, mineral processing, oil/gas/petrochemical plants and platforms. Steve has also presented numerous courses world-wide on industrial data communications, data acquisition and process control and the impact of new technologies on instrumentation and control to over 30,000 engineers and technicians to clients such as NASA, Rolls Royce, BP and Manchester University.
Steve has co-authored and edited 25 books on aspects of engineering that have been published across the world. A Fellow of Engineers Australia with a licence
to practise as a Chemical, Mechanical and Electrical Chartered Professional Engineer, Steve firmly believes in Nelson Mandela’s mantra that: Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
As Dean of the Engineering Institute of Technology, Steve leads the college in provision of programs to over 1500 students per year (both on-campus and online) from 140 countries with an unswerving focus on excellence, caring and value for students.
EIT on-campus programs include classroom sessions, practical lab exercises, assessments, class discussions and self-study. Additionally, our students have access to industry experts based around the globe through live and interactive online presentations. Our students have access to a personalized Learning Management System where all course materials are available 24/7.
Practical Exercises, Remote Labs and Assignments
All EIT programs provide access to remote laboratories and cutting-edge simulation software. Hands-on laboratory practicals are an essential component of EIT’s programs to ensure our students put theory into practice. These hands-on workshops cover the major discipline-specific applied skills required for competency in engineering practice.
Remote and on-campus students need support, encouragement and a go-to person. Our students are supported by dedicated Learning Support Officers (LSOs) and Course Coordinators for the duration of their studies, giving them a greater chance of success. Students studying our degrees will have a committed LSO for each unit of study.
